Doctoral Funding Information

Funding for doctoral students at the School of Engineering & Applied Science generally come in two forms: graduate research assistantships (GRAs) or graduate teaching assistantships (GTAs). Funding amounts vary by department, faculty member and research topic.

Research Assistantships

  • Covers 18 credit hours per academic year (9 credits each semester).
  • Monthly stipend for living expenses (amount varies from year to year).
  • Student must work with a specific faculty member.

Teaching Assistantships

  • Covers 18 credit hours per academic year (9 credits each semester).
  • Monthly stipend for living expenses (amount varies from year to year).
  • For international students: Must obtain at least a 100 on the TOEFL or 7.0 on the IELTS.

How to Qualify or Apply

There is no separate application process to qualify for doctoral funding. All applicants who submit an application for a doctoral program are generally considered for funding during the application review process and selected directly by a faculty member. If you are awarded funding, you will be notified in your admissions letter. 

Tips for Improving Your Chances

Some general recommendations for improving your chances of receiving funding are:

  • Make early contact with a faculty member who has a research interest similar to yours.
  • Highlight your attendance and presentations at research conferences, as well as research papers, on your resume/CV.
  • Apply and receive external funding sources to demonstrate to faculty that you are able to partially support your research.
