Program with Beijing Normal University

GW's School of Engineering and Applied Science has established a special program for master's students in the College of Information Science and Technology at Beijing Normal University (BNU/CIST) in China.

This program allows admitted BNU/CIST graduate students to transfer three pre-approved graduate-level courses from BNU (each three credits, totaling nine credits) into the M.S. Computer Science or M.S. Electrical Engineering programs at GW.

After completion of the first three courses at BNU/CIST, students transfer the credits to their selected master's degree program at GW and enroll in the remaining seven (7) courses at SEAS.

BNU/CIST students must complete the SEAS program within two years from the time of their admission by registering for at least three approved graduate courses during each semester while at GW. Students have the option to take a reduced course load as course credits are being completed.

Upon completion of the SEAS program, students receive a Master of Science degree from GW.

Admissions Process

  1. Apply to SEAS by completing and submitting an online application form. Please follow all admissions requirements except for the application fee - this fee is waived for current BNU students. Please email engineering@gwu.edu and request a fee waiver.
  2. Once you received your admissions offer, complete the Intent to Enroll form and defer your admission for the following semester as you take the first three courses (9 credit hours total) at BNU. You must receive a B or higher in each of the BNU courses in order to have them eligible for transfer to GW.
  3. Prior to the beginning of your first semester at GW, submit your BNU to engineering@gwu.edu. Once the grade requirements have been met, you will enroll at GW to complete your remaining master's coursework.

  • Credit hours: 30
  • Thesis options: thesis and non-thesis options are available
  • Other requirements:
    • Three courses (9 credit hours) from Beijing Normal University (BNU): The Design and Analysis of Computer Algorithms, Computer Architecture, Software Engineering.
    • The remaining seven courses (21 credit hours) can be selected in consultation with the student's adviser. Two of these courses may come from a different department.
    • Selecting an area of focus is encouraged, but not required.

  • Thesis options: thesis and non-thesis options are available
  • Other requirements:
    • Three courses (9 credit hours) from Beijing Normal University (BNU): Stochastic Processes, Modern Signal Processing, Digital Communication Theory
    • The remaining seven courses (21 credit hours) can be selected from the areas of focus in Electrical Engineering. Students are required to take at least one course in the department outside of his/her area of focus.
    • Colloquium requirement: Students must fulfill this zero-credit course by attending five colloquium seminars, workshops, or symposia sponsored by the department.
