AES and EAP Coursework

If your admissions letter states that you are required to take courses in Applied English Studies (AES) or Summer English for Academic Purposes (EAP), you must take extra steps to ensure that your admissions conditions are met during the enrollment process.

Applied English Studies (AES)

The Applied English Studies (AES) program is designed for international students who have been evaluated as academically qualified for graduate study at the George Washington University, but received TOEFL scores ranging from 74-79 (with no individual score below 16) or an overall IELTS of 5.5 (with no individual bandscore below 5.0).

AES is offered during the Summer Session II semester, which is generally held from the beginning of July through the middle of August.

If your admissions letter states that you have been offered admission with the condition of taking AES coursework, you must take and pass AES before you can begin your degree program at the School of Engineering & Applied Science.

In order to enroll in AES, you must first accept your admissions offer by submitting the Intent to Enroll form, which will launch your visa request process.

Once this form has been processed, you will receive an email within 2-3 business days from our office with further instructions to obtain your I-20 or DS-2019. Upon receipt of your I-20 or DS-2019, you will be contacted by the university to begin your enrollment into the proper AES course.

Summer English for Academic Purposes (EAP)

If your admissions letter states that you are required to take an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course during your first semester at GW, you have the choice of taking EAP during Summer Session II (generally the beginning of July through the middle of August) or during the fall semester.

Please note: EAP is not offered during Summer Session I.

If you choose to take Summer EAP, you must take either EAP 6110 or 6111. This option requires you to demonstrate additional funding on the Visa Request Form.

In order to enroll in Summer EAP, you must first accept your admissions offer by submitting the Intent to Enroll form and sending an email to [email protected] requesting to take Summer EAP.

Once the Intent to Enroll form is processed and your email has been received, you will receive an email within 1-2 business days from our office with further instructions to obtain your I-20 or DS-2019.

Please note: Students admitted to a program in the Engineering Management & Systems Engineering (EMSE) department with TOEFL scores between 90-94 or a 6.0 on IELTS are required to take Summer EAP. This condition will be stated in your admissions letter. Alternatively, students in an EMSE program with TOEFL scores of 95-99 or an IELTS score of 6.5 can choose to take EAP during the summer or fall semesters.
